Projects

What I'm working on now, and where I'm headed. Each project also has its own neuron in the Gut-on-Chip Lab.

Now

Ongoing

Creatine transport in neuronal cells

Competition assays in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells test how guanidinoacetate (GAA) competes with creatine for uptake through the creatine transporter SLC6A8. I measure intracellular creatine by LC-MS and normalize it to total protein.

Ongoing

Whole mouse brain clearing

Clearing intact mouse brains and staining them with fluorophore-conjugated antibodies, so whole-brain structures can be imaged in 3D without sectioning.

Ongoing

Oligodendrocyte differentiation

Differentiating primary oligodendrocyte precursor cells into mature oligodendrocytes, the cells that make myelin.

Ongoing

Data for a CIRM-funded study

As data project manager, I bring together immunohistochemistry, microscopy, in situ hybridization, and RNA-seq data for a California Institute for Regenerative Medicine grant.

Next

Where I'm headed

Gut–brain models of autism

Patient-matched gut organoids and gut-on-chip models to study the GI symptoms that often come with autism, and how butyrate and other microbial metabolites affect the brain and behavior.
